I’m concerned the cartoon bears aren’t using slang correctly

There’s a series of commercials for Charmin toilet paper on tv here in Canada, featuring a family of cartoon bears who teach us about the perils of dingleberries and sopping up the results of a heavy night of binge honey consumption using super-absorbent toilet paper. (I’m not sure what that would be like, incidentally. Extra sticky?)

The most recent one has momma and papa bear sitting around a tree stump having a morning coffee. Papa asks momma bear if her little cup of espresso is really enough. When she offers him a sip, he exclaims “now that’s what I’m talking about!” What is what he’s been talking about? This bear is clearly trying to appear cooler than he is, by repeating words he’s overheard his teenage son use.

I’m also concerned about bears drinking coffee. Aren’t we better served by having sleepy bears?

  1. I’m amazed at this commercial’s frank inference about the laxative properties of coffee. I know it affects me that way, but I wasn’t expecting to see a bear suck back a coffee and almost immediately have to take a shit.

Wow, I hadn’t even thought of it that way. Do you think that’s why he’s so sluggish, and why he responds so enthusiastically when he drinks the espresso? Because he feels the massive bear-turd finally stir and prepare to drop?

I’m still not sure how to feel about the premise of the commercials. Is it a take on the classic rhetorical rejoinder “does a bear shit in the woods?” Or is it a play on the joke featuring a rabbit and a bear:

So a bear and a rabbit are taking a shit in the woods.

The bear turns to the rabbit and says ” Do you ever have trouble with shit sticking to your fur?”

And the rabbit says ” Nope, never have.”

So the bear wipes his ass with the rabbit

which I only mentioned because the bear in the joke also seems very concerned about toilet paper
